Two of Crete’s most important structures, the Palace of Knossos and the Palace of Phaistos, are located in the Heraklion region. The Minoan Palace of Knossos is the largest of all Minoan palace complexes, spanning over 20,000 square meters. Visitors are transported back in time to the Minoan culture by the striking red columns, colorful murals, and the famous royal room.
Located on the eastern slope of Kastri Hill, the Minoan Palace of Phaistos is regarded as the second most significant Minoan site after Knossos. It attracts history buffs from all over the world because of its breathtaking natural surroundings.
Heraklion maintains a wonderful, almost storybook atmosphere despite its frequently bustling downtown.
